Draw Me A Glass

Draw Me a Glass

Cheers! It’s my birthday today, so I thought I’d share my last piece of 2023, “Draw Me a Glass”, drawn on white PaintOn, with Polychromos pencils.

Cheers, It’s my birthday today!

Although I don’t drink wine, and I actually finished this drawing in December (so it’s not my first piece of 2024!), I thought I’d share “Draw Me a Glass”.

I spent much of December finishing previously started pieces (this one accompanied me on a little holiday in August…) and that’s my plan for January too.

New Year Reflections

I also thought, during this personal time that I am taking, that I would finally get round to writing a series of posts to share some of the challenges I personally face when it comes to art (and maybe life…) Because I’m not a natural artist. I am hindered by many things. I often share the struggles I have with certain pieces in art groups I’m in, but here all you tend to see is the finished product. I can promise you getting to the finish line is rarely easy for me!

I am big on being open about the tougher things in life, because I know how much it means to me when I find someone who ‘gets it’. So maybe there’ll be some followers on my Facebook page who will feel seen by what I will share on there over the coming weeks.

The Challenge in Colour

This particular drawing lent itself to what was actually going to be my last topic, and that is COLOUR! There’s a reason I started in graphite! Coloured pencil is hard anyway, all the layering, understanding the pencils/papers and what they’ll do/not do, and that’s even before you get to working out colour.

Colour is something I have *always* stressed about in art, because I know I am starting on the back foot as it were – I am partially colour blind. Officially red/green – but it affects how I see most other colours, and some I just plain don’t see at all.  For me anything with a red hue (so pinks, oranges, purples, browns and blacks…) is the trickiest – hence the red wine being the perfect image to accompany this post!

It was the ‘hell-cat’ commission last summer that started to give me a little more colour confidence – because the damn cat looked a different colour (anything from grey to brown to orange to purple..!) in every photo I looked at..! That’s something that’s pretty common, because lighting is very instrumental in how we see colour. Different photos can be confusing, but they can also be helpful. For pet commissions, I like to have a written description of the colour I am aiming for, especially if I am sent multiple photos, so that I can keep that in mind when I am drawing something that I might not see in the same way as the owner!
